Mineral Makeup FAQs
Concerned about the validity of all those 'natural' or 'organic' claims out there? Finding it tough to separate the marketing jargon from the facts? We believe you should have all the facts you need to make an informed choice about what you place on your skin. That's why we've created this page to answer all the common questions about our INIKA certified organic and mineral makeup.
If you have a question which isn't answered here, please contact our friendly customer service team.
You claim your products are safe to use after cosmetic surgery and facial procedures? Isn’t it unwise to use any makeup when your skin has been through a procedure?
Mineral makeup is the only kind of makeup recommended for use after cosmetic or facial procedures. Because of the purity of INIKA’s ingredients, it is extremely gentle on the skin. The minerals in INIKA products have soothing properties for the skin and also help to hide any redness.
INIKA is absolutely committed to upholding the highest ethics in everything we do and produce. Our products do not contain Palm Oil although some contain an ethically sourced derivative, which has been certified by Roundtable of Sustainable Palm Oil (RSPO). This certification is a not-for-profit association that develops and implement global standards for Certified Sustainable Palm Oil (CSPO).
INIKA remains wholeheartedly committed to preserving our precious environment and respects all those, animals included, who reside within it.
It is important to remember that no products in the INIKA range contain talc. Talc is a mineral, produced by the mining of talc rocks and then processed by crushing, drying and milling. Processing eliminates a number of trace minerals from the talc, but does not separate minute fibres which are very similar to asbestos. Talc itself is toxic and a known carcinogen. INIKA will never use talc in any of our products.
Parabens are preservatives which are commonly used in products such as soap, shampoo, deodorant and makeup. There is accumulating evidence questioning the safety of parabens. Traces of parabens have been found in breast tumour samples, although its link to the development of cancer is disputed. Despite the link being unproven the potential is sufficient for INIKA to decide to never use parabens.
NO! INIKA mineral foundations are pure, safe and natural and don’t contain any of the ‘nasties’. The inert minerals cannot support bacteria and all products are NON-comedogenic, meaning they do not clog the pores or irritate the skin.
Many women dislike that heavy made up feeling experienced with traditional makeup. Mineral cosmetics are different and you can achieve incredible coverage without feeling like you are wearing makeup!
Unfortunately, all mineral cosmetics are not created equal! We have taken an active stance to make a difference in the world, to produce products that are ethical, healthy and safe for your skin as well as our precious environment.
INIKA was launched in 2006 and is an Australian mineral cosmetics brand created from quality minerals sourced from the very rocks that form our land. What makes INIKA different is the purity of ingredients and what is NOT in our products. INIKA products are pure and natural, made from crushed mineral pigments and contain absolutely NO harsh chemicals, nanoparticles, fillers, talc, bismuth oxychloride (a known skin irritant and by-product of refined lead and copper), GM ingredients, parabens, preservatives or fragrances.
Ingredients listing laws mean that some of these ingredients may not even be listed on product packaging. Customers have piece of mind in knowing that every single ingredient used in any INIKA product will be readily available and listed for review by the consumer on packaging and the INIKA website.
INIKA is also one of the only makeup brands in the world to be 100% Certified Vegan, Halal and Cruelty Free. This means not only are INIKA products not tested on animals, but none of its ingredients are tested on animals either.
YES! INIKA mineral foundations have an SPF of 20. The NON-nano/NON-micronised titanium dioxide and zinc oxide used in INIKA products offer natural, built-in sun protection by reflecting and scattering UV rays.
The minerals are also very resistant to water, so are a great option for those who like to wear makeup when exercising, going to the beach or swimming.
INIKA’s mineral cosmetics are made from the purest natural minerals (fine miniature rock crystals) taken from the earth. Mineral makeup has gained popularity because unlike more traditional products, they generally contain fewer preservatives.
They should also be nanoparticle and fragrance-free, which is an important factor for users with sensitive skin and allergies. Many other ingredients such as wax, talc, oil and dye, normally found in traditional makeup, are absent from most mineral makeup.
Mineral makeup is one of the largest current beauty trends, despite it being around for over 30 years. The present trend towards being “green” and using natural ingredients has given new life to mineral cosmetics.
We use only natural minerals (fine miniature rock crystals) that come from Mother Earth. Our minerals are finely milled making it a purer type of makeup as compared to more conventional types. Other ingredients used are Zinc Oxide and Titanium Dioxide (we use the NON-nano/NON-micronized type which means that it cannot be absorbed into the blood stream and the particles are of a larger size that sit on the surface of the skin).
Zinc Oxide provides a level of natural in-built sun protection, Iron Oxides (the source of the beautiful pigments), in combination with Jojoba Seed Oil, Certified Organic Aloe Vera Leaf Juice, Certified Organic Macadamia Oil, Certified Organic Shea Butter, Calendula Extract, Certified Organic Oils of Rosehip, Evening Primrose, Hazelnut, Avocado, Apricot as well as Certified Organic Essential Oils of Lavender, Sandlewood, Ylang Ylang, Geranium and Rosemary Extract.
INIKA is a Hindu word that means “small earth”. This refers to the “small world” concept of women being able to network and share knowledge – see www.thrivinghealthywomen.com – and also refers to the fact that the earth’s resources are finite and precious and should be treated with care.
Yes. But we only choose ingredients that we are confident causes no harm. Titanium dioxide is approved by the FDA and safe for use in cosmetics.
We want you to make an informed decision about your cosmetics. We carefully checked this with our manufacturer. Yes, there have been some studies which show free radicals can be caused by a photo-catalytic reaction between Titanium Dioxide and UV light, BUT it’s important to understand those studies were done "in vitro". The research was not collected from human cells under the skin. Therefore there is no direct link to prove placing a cosmetic on your skin would cause the titanium dioxide to be absorbed into your skin. Likewise, there is no known evidence to show it would go deep enough to create a photo-catalytic reaction or cause extra free radicals in your body. We feel the use of non-nano sized titanium dioxide is safe for use in cosmetics, and we use our products ourselves, but ultimately the choice is up to you.
No we don’t. Not ever.
INIKA does NOT use nano-sized or micronized titanium dioxide. To our knowledge we are the ONLY mineral cosmetics company that take the stance that we do.
Nanoparticles are micro-particles that have been fragmented to sizes below 100 nanometers; they are often used in sunscreens and mineral makeup products. We do not use nanoparticles because they can easily and rapidly enter the bloodstream and this is of particular concern with certain ingredients, such as titanium dioxide.
Just to clarify, there are two types of titanium dioxide:
- Micronized (which is nano), and
- NON micronized (which is larger, and therefore not nano).
INIKA’s titanium dioxide is NON micronized. It is considered 'fine' with the particles between 1 and 2 microns, however a nano or ultra-fine particle measures less than 0.1 microns (100 nanometers). Our ingredients are well above the nanoparticle threshold and therefore cannot penetrate the skin or enter the bloodstream.
To further set your mind at rest, our non-nano sized titanium dioxide is uncoated and free of silicone or dimethicone (silicone derived emollients) which coat the skin, trapping anything beneath it while inhibiting the skin’s natural ability to breathe.
There have recently been alarming reports that show 8 out of 10 high-end cosmetic brands contain some form of nanoparticles in their concealers and foundations.
At INIKA we strongly believe we should never sacrifice our health and wellbeing for beauty. And we hope you agree.
Unfortunately, no. We have made a conscious and ethical choice not to use nano-particles but cosmetic manufacturers are allowed to use nano-articles in their makeups. What’s worse we are very concerned that there is no legal obligation for manufacturers to advise consumers about the presence of nano-particles. Nor do they have to provide current safety data on product labels, so consumers are effectively denied the right to make an informed choice.
Heavy metals occur naturally in the earth. So logically, we would expect important mineral compounds, such as our natural colorants and key mineral compounds like mica, would have trace amounts of heavy metals because they are mined from the earth.
However, we always test our products to ensure the levels of heavy metals is within the safety guidelines as set by the FDA for use in cosmetics.
If you are concerned about the use of chemicals and what you put on your skin then you would probably know that many mass-produced mineral makeups use Bismuth Oxychloride. They use it because it gives a ‘healthy’ sheen and helps the makeup stick to your skin… but the problem is it is also a bi-product of lead and copper refining, and even worse, it is nearly identical to arsenic, a very toxic chemical.
Please rest assured we never use Bismuth Oxychloride as we believe this is not something you should ever place on your skin.
Our kabuki handle is natural wood sourced from sustainable forestries and the bristles are 100% synthetic, made from PBT nylon.
There are aluminium ferrules in the middle part of the kabuki brush (which does not come in contact with your skin). When we were testing our product we discovered the brush would not look or perform as a traditional kabuki brush without aluminium ferrule in the middle part of our brushes, so we made a conscious choice to use it.
Our mineral liquid foundations are made from natural and organic formulations. We have discovered natural makeup products are a little more variable than unnatural or man-made ones. This means there can be some slight colour variation with different manufactured batches.
We are passionate about producing the most natural and best performing makeup, which is why we monitor new batches of our foundation for colour and consistency; plus we are always researching methods to reduce variations, without jeopardising our commitment to natural and organic products.
Nope. Although soy is technically gluten-free we understand that soy products can be cross-contaminated by gluten during the production and transport process. That’s one of the reasons we don’t use soy or soy derivatives in our mineral foundations.
Our manufacturers advise Castor seed oil is not deadly. In fact, some people ingest it intentionally as a laxative. The castor oil used in the INIKA lipsticks is safety tested, otherwise it would not be in the INCI dictionary and it would not be approved for use in cosmetics.
You will be pleased to learn that INIKA offers you the Worlds 1st range of Certified Organic Vegan Lipsticks. In fact, our entire Lip range (including our balms, tints and pencils) are Certified Organic and 100% Vegan!
Nuts, nut oils and nut by-products in the cosmetic industry aren't regulated so it is difficult for us to guarantee that raw materials are completely nut free.
There are nut-based oils in our certified organic lip liners, eye and brow and liners.
Our light reflecting highlighting crème, our mineral mascaras as well as our organic lipstick range are all free from nut-based products, but many of our INIKA products use at least one nut oil or nut by-product in them such as shea butter, almond and macadamia oil (please check the individual ingredients listing for more information).
Please note that although products, like our eye makeup remover and the Pure Primer, don't contain nut oils or any nut products they DO have a few ingredients that could contain some residual nut product, so we recommend nut allergy sufferers simply avoid all these products.
Alcohol in non-food products undergoes a process to ‘denature’ it whereby it tastes bad and is non-drinkable. These alcohols, bear no relation to common intoxicating alcoholic drinks, hence they are halal for use in skin care products. You can find more information about this here www.ifanca.org
INIKA is a certified halal and vegan brand, adhering to the strict guidelines as part of the halal accreditation processes.
The Islamic Food and Nutrition Council of America (IFANCA) has confirmed Cetyl Alcohol and Cetearyl Alcohol are fatty alcohol waxes, which are naturally occurring in plants and therefore halal.
INIKA sources glycerin from vegetables and not from any animal or animal byproduct, making our products both cruelty-free, vegan-friendly and, of course, halal-approved.
