What’s the right order to apply your skincare products?

What order should I apply my makeup in?

Cleansing, toning and moisturising are key to a basic skincare routine, but there are a few products you can add to your routine to achieve achieve your best skin yet, such as serums and face oils. But it’s important to apply them in the correct order.

Here’s why. Our skin is super protective, and it spends a lot of time keeping things out — like pollution and sun damage. So, for our skincare products to sink in, we need to layer them properly. This will help you to get the most out of your products, and leave your skin healthy, hydrated and balanced.

A simple rule of thumb is to apply products from the thinnest consistency to the thickest (or liquid to cream).

Read on for our breakdown on how to layer skincare and the best order to apply skincare.

Your step-by-step skincare routine

Step 1: Cleanse your skin thoroughly

Instead of just splashing your face with warm water every morning, use your favourite cleanser. This will wash away any sebum or sweat that naturally accumulates overnight, as well as your nighttime skincare products. Plus, it’s an invigorating way to start the day!

At night, it’s important to double-cleanse. Reach for your regular cleanser first, to remove makeup, sweat and oil that built up during the day. Then, use a micellar water to deeply cleanse your skin and lift bacteria and pollution from your pores. Try our Phyto-Active Micellar Rosewater to gently remove all impurities from your skin. Add in our Camellia Oil cleanser as a double cleanse as an additional step in the routine. It has a silicone head to get deep into pores and also increase blood flow circulation for brighter skin

Post-cleansing, your skin is prepped and ready to absorb the rest of your skincare products.

Top tip: Aim to exfoliate 2-3 times a week with the Phytofuse Renew Caviar Lime Exfoliator to slough off dead skin cells, unclog pores and leave your skin with a healthy glow.

Step 2: Apply a serum

While your skin’s still damp, add 2-3 drops of serum to your palms. Then, gently press your hands over your face, neck and decolletage. That’s how to apply face serum correctly.

Serums are water-based, so they absorb quickly and penetrate the deeper layers of the skin. They’re also potent, which is why we apply serum before oil. They contain a high concentration of active ingredients (like vitamin C) to target specific concerns, such as dryness, dullness or premature ageing.

The Phytofuse Renew Resveratrol Serum is our go-to, with 14 botanical oils that boost collagen production, hydrate and firm the skin, and fight free radicals. It can be used morning and night, and it’s suitable for all skin types.

How many serums can you use at once? You can apply one serum, or a cocktail of serums if you want to treat a few different skincare concerns at once. For maximum effectiveness, don’t use more than 2-3 at a time, and give each a minute to sink into the skin.

Step 3: Dab on an eye cream

Wondering when to apply eye cream? The answer is after serums, but before oils and moisturisers.

The skin around the eyes is thin and delicate, so it’s important to use specially formulated products around that area. Enter: an eye cream.

Our Phytofuse Renew™ Resveratrol Eye Cream hydrates and plumps the skin while reducing fine lines and dark circles. And a little goes a long way! Using your ring finger, gently pat in a pea-size amount of eye cream under your eyes. Try not to tug or swipe at the skin, as this might cause irritation and dryness.

Top tip: If you’re using a spot treatment on blemishes, apply that during this step, too. Since these products are potent, we want them as close to the skin as possible.

Step 4: Apply any other treatments

Your skin repairs and regenerates overnight, so you want to apply your heavy-duty products right before bed.

If you use a retinol product, peel pad or prescription skincare medication (like a rosacea cream), this is when to reach for those products.

Step 5: Massage in a face oil

When to apply face oil confuses some people, but it’s before moisturiser.

Face oils nourish and soften the skin, and they mimic our skin's natural sebum production to keep it plump and healthy. They’re made up of botanical extracts, vitamins and minerals, and they’re full of fatty acids to restore the skin.

Oils are also hydrophobic, which means they lock in moisture and protect the skin from environmental stressors, like pollution.

During the day, it’s a good idea to use an individual oil, like our Phyto-Active Rosehip Oil Blend. This oil is lightweight and rich in fatty acids to plump the skin, deliver deep hydration and speed up cell renewal. As for how to use rosehip oil on skin, warm 2-3 drops between your fingertips, then massage it into your skin to boost your circulation.

At night, switch to an oil blend, such as the Phyto-Active Botanical Face Oil. The formula is a little more nourishing, and harnesses 18 botanical oils to deeply moisturise and rejuvenate the skin overnight. It also strengthens the skin’s natural barrier and doesn’t leave a greasy residue.

Step 6: Apply a moisturiser

Moisturisers create a barrier on top of your skin, so they’re the perfect last step of your skincare routine. They lock in all the goodness from your other products, and seal in moisture.

During the day, choose a lightweight formula, like our Phytofuse Renew Maca Root Day Cream. In the evening, switch to a richer night cream, such as the Phytofuse Renew Resveratrol Night Cream. This luxe night cream works to repair and hydrate the skin, so you can wake up to a healthy, radiant complexion. The thicker formula also forms a protective coating on the skin to prevent water from evaporating while you sleep.

Step 8: Slather on a sunscreen

Last but not least, don’t forget to apply sunscreen before leaving the house in the morning. It sits on top of the skin, and is applied after your moisturiser so it won’t affect your other skincare products.
